Thailand has a tropical climate, so expect heat and humidity most of the year.

Sunshine heat, humidity and occasional showers. Warm weather year-round, with cooler evenings in the north.

  • Sunscreen & sunglasses

  • Breathable, moisture-wicking clothing
  • Rain gear during wet months
  • Light jacket (indoor A/C can be freezing)

When visiting temples or royal buildings:

  • Easy-to-remove shoes
  • Cover shoulders and knees (both men and women)
  • Bring a light scarf or sarong to wrap around if needed
  • Loose long-sleeve tops or lightweight trousers work well
  • Avoid overly revealing clothes
  • Locals tend to dress modestly even in casual settings
  • T-shirts and biker shorts are more culturally fitting than tank tops and short shorts

City Exploring (Bangkok, Chiang Mai):

  • Laundromats: ~50฿ per kg for washing, 50฿ for drying or ironing.
  • Self-wash: Buy detergent from 7-Eleven and wash in the sink.
  • Hotel services: ~80-100฿ per item (higher in 5-star hotels).

Tip: Travelling light makes beach hopping, train rides, and city walks much more enjoyable.

Tip: Pack versatile, mix-and-match pieces that suit your itinerary.

Tip: Buy common items in Thailand (7-Eleven). Follow TSA 3-1-1 liquid rules.

  • Snorkelling gear (unless the accommodation rents for a good rate)

Toiletries

  • After-sun care (e.g., aloe vera gel, lip balm - travel-sized)
  • Waterproof ziplock bags or packing cubes (for wet clothes & leak-prone items)

Emergency Items

  • First-aid kit
  • Whistle
  • Sea sickness & food poisoning medications

Thailand has strict customs laws. Avoid packing the following:

  • Illegal substances - Narcotics and prescription drugs without documentation are strictly banned.
  • Obscene materials - Pornographic content is prohibited.
  • Disrespectful items - Anything mocking the Thai flag or Royal family.
  • Counterfeit goods - Fake designer items, electronics, or DVDs.
  • Fake currency - Possession of counterfeit money is illegal.
  • Endangered species - Ivory, coral, and other banned animal/plant products under CITES are not allowed.

Tip: When in doubt, leave it out. Always check Thailand’s customs regulations before packing.
